On average the History of the Universe gets about 2300 visitors and serves about 4000 pages per day, although this is seasonal.
How the site is built
The site is generated from an Access database using content management software developed by Philip Brown.
He uses the following software:
- the pages are generated by bespoke software running on Microsoft Access.
- graphics were produced by Photoshop, Paintshop Pro, Bryce, TimeTrek.
- molecules were drawn with ChemDraw
I believe all appropriate credits have been given for use of images. If any images have not been correctly credited, please contact the editor.
Publication History
The first edition of the web site was put live on 20th Nov 1998.
Administrative change on 23rd Feb 1999.
Extensive changes 5th Mar 1999.
30 May 1999: Added links to Virtual Microscope. Changed front page. Upgraded news. Offered courses. Created misleading advertisements page.
25 June 1999: Fixed error with pages dealing with discovery of extra-solar planets. Added phylogeny of animals and added several pages dealing with fish, also re-ordering pages. Added yellow brick images to various pages. Changed image on index.html to small yellow brick overview (from introduction.gif to overview.gif). Changed logo to bricks.
August 1999: Added contents to left of every page and moved menu to top of page. Removed INDEX from index.html, reducing size from 35K to 14K
September 1999: Produced electronic version of web site as Acrobat pdf.
Nov 1999: Redesigned page using white text on black blobs. Added comments form to every page. Reinstated banner adverts.
Dec 1999: Added links to Recommend-it, Lycos and AdClub. Removed yellow brick road and added box images to welcome page.
Jan 2000: Added link to EB and Lycos in References. Renamed references to "further information". Wrote summary on welcome page. Added arrows to boxes.
Feb 2000: Strip out left hand column with blobs, move into "Where are we" section. Added summary of site on every page.
Mar 2000: Change Comments to Questions, Answers and Comments. Add radio buttons. Add Q & A page. Automate processing of questions.
Apr 2000: Use style sheets.
May 2000: Use 4 tabs
Mar 2002 Minor Revisions. Reduced to 3 tabs.
July 2006 Major upgrade of web started.
