RNA

Nucleic acids are of two types: DNA and RNA. The difference between them lies in the type of sugar they use in their sugar-phosphate backbone and in the bases they use.

In life today DNA is mainly used to store information in genes, while RNA is used to carry the information from the DNA to the protein-building system, as well as by the protein building system itself. In addition some viruses carry RNA, while others carry DNA.

Some people believe that RNA was used by life before DNA, since it is more closely involved with the protein building system, which is fundamental to the process of life.
