On August 11th the History of the Universe team (Pat and Phil Brown) were in Traunkirchen, Austria to observe. We watched for an hour as the moon moved in front of the Sun. About 10 minutes before the eclipse was due a coach load of Japanese tourists joined the scattered party on the shore of the lake beneath the tiny church on the hill. This romantic village tingled with excitement. Even the main road fell silent. A greyness shrouded the 1000 meter mountains surrounding us.

As the last rays of the Sun shone through the last valley on the edge of the Moon, a brilliant diamond ring lit the sky. The Japanese applauded. We were all moved by the beauty and awesomeness of the spectacle. Well worth the visit.
