The citizens of the world are being increasingly faced by questions which they know are fundamental to the future well-being of mankind but feel that they are ill prepared to answer. For example: "Is genetically modified food the answer to the world's hunger or an environmental disaster in the making?" The History of the Universe is a short account of the origin and development of the Universe, Earth, life, mankind, and technology to the present day with a glimpse into the future. It is a means of structuring and giving relevance to a wide range of basic scientific, economic, political and technological ideas. These ideas are fundamental to these [decisions] which are facing the citizens of the world. It gives a global perspective on an increasingly global society.
Throughout history societies have created their own myths of creation, to answer the fundamental questions which all people ask at some point in their lives, such as "Why am I here?", "Where did I come from?" and "Where am I going?". HotU is a modern myth of creation. It is not a religion, since religion is based upon faith, whereas the History of the Universe is based upon the best available scientific information. Most of this information has only become available within the last 50 years, and parts of the story are still being discovered. I believe that the history of the Universe is uniquely important and should be a part of everybody's education. Most educational curricula do not present this information in an historical context. Parts of the story are split between physics, cosmology, biology, chemistry, economics, anthropology and a number of other disciplines. Thus the overall picture is lost, so that even scientists rarely know even the basic facts of other disciplines. Almost all branches of study relate in some way to the History of the Universe story, so it can be used for: developing integrated science courses at secondary and tertiary education levels; building reference works such as encyclopaedias; for museums; and as the basis for informed debate on the crucial questions facing mankind now and in the future.
