We have already seen what happens when you add two electrons to an atom.
When we add a third electron it cannot enter the hard shell formed by the first two electrons, and has to start a new shell outside the first one.
This single electron is easily lost. Lithium atoms are like this.
An atom which can lose an electron is called a reducing agent. Lithium is a powerful reducing agent.
