Phil Brown was born in Coventry, UK, in 1948. He started studying the history of the Universe while studying physics at Nottingham University in 1968, with the aim of "finding out where we came from". After a period of teaching he went back to this study in 1974, moving to Cambridge in 1977. In order to manage the huge amount of data he was gathering together he learnt to program computers at Cambridge University in 1979. This was a momentous year for him as it also saw the birth of his son, Kelvin. After this he returned to a rewarding period of teaching in Coventry at Hereward College, the national college for the physically handicapped, where he increased his computing skills and became an IT consultant to a national research project into using computers to enhance learning for the disabled. From here he moved into IT full time, as software engineer, trainer, systems analyst, consultant. At the same time he kept up his studies of the History of the Universe and founded Penny Press in 1986, ready for publication on the subject. The first products of Penny Press were, however, newsletters for the local branch of the British Computer Society. He published articles for MacUser magazine and a book HyperDictionary (via another publisher) about Hypercard, an early type of web for the Macintosh computer 1989. In 1992 he fulfilled a lifelong ambition and published how own book, Global Vision upon which this web site is based. He is currently editor of the History of the Universe web site and author of the software which makes it go. He subsidizes this expensive hobby by working as a computer consultant. He is currently a web developer for a multinational company. He loves walking with his wife at the weekends and on holiday. He can be contacted at philip@pennypress.co.uk. |
