Another important effect of oxygen was in the atmosphere. When sunlight hits oxygen molecules at the top of the air it rearranges them into ozone, a molecule made of three oxygen atoms. Ozone absorbs dangerous ultraviolet rays from sunlight. For the first time the land became safe for life. Some chemicals such as the chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs) which are used in some countries' aerosols, refrigerators and factories, can destroy ozone, This has created holes in the ozone layer at the poles of the Earth, which let in the ultraviolet rays.
