Our new free weekly podcast Time Crystal tells this story as sci-fi fantasy

We have just seen that to build a protein, life needs to know which amino acids to join together and in what order. This brings us to the other type of molecule essential for life, the nucleic acids.

Like the proteins, these molecules are also in the form of a chain. The backbone is a chain of sugar and phosphate molecules. There are different types of nucleic acid, each using a different type of sugar. DNA, for example, uses a type of ribose sugar called deoxyribose. In our diagrams we will often show the backbone as a simple line, to make things clearer.

Hanging off each sugar is a base.
