Mammals could keep themselves warm. Perhaps that is why they survived the meteorite. They evolved quickly, filling most life-styles left empty by the dinosaurs.

Most mammal families we know today had appeared by 50 million years ago. Whales spread in the oceans while hoofed plant-eating animals, the horse family, became common on land and evolved into giants. Meat-eating and flying mammals also appeared at this time.
