A group of molecules called a ribosome can read the information in the bases of nucleic acid and use it to build a protein. The ribosome reads three bases at a time, and uses this as a code for choosing the next amino acid to add to the growing protein.

So the sequence of the bases in a nucleic acid controls which protein the ribosome builds.
