Our new free weekly podcast Time Crystal tells this story as sci-fi fantasy

When life needs to make a protein it unzips the two halves of the gene and copies one half to make the message. The message is then used by a ribosome to make the protein. The amazing thing is that it is proteins which control the unzipping and copying of genes. So life is a complex interaction of nucleic acids and proteins.
In life today genes are made from one type of nucleic acid called DNA, while messages are made from a different type, called RNA.
Now that we know a little bit about how life works we can begin to think about how it began.
