About 1400 years ago a nomadic religious leader called Muhammad started the Islamic religion in Arabia. This spread rapidly. It claimed that there was only one God and that Muhammad was his messenger.
Christianity and Islam both built empires, and holy wars and crusades were fought between followers of the two faiths. During the Dark Ages, Christians in Constantinople and Islamic scholars studied the works of the ancient Greeks, carefully copying them, as well as their own holy books, but Christians in Europe knew little about these books. Islam also took ideas about mathematics from India and developed them. |
