Molecules composed only of carbon and hydrogen atoms, typically found in oils and fats.
The carbon atoms form the backbone with the hydrogen atoms sticking out of them. Hydrocarbons are found in petroleum and natural gas. They are used as fuels, lubricants and raw materials for the production of plastics, fibers, rubbers, solvents, explosives, and industrial chemicals. Hydrocarbons do not form hydrogen bonds or stick to other molecules. You might describe them as "slippery" molecules, to contrast them with water molecules which are "sticky" such as water. This is the reason why "oil and water do not mix". The scientific name for this is "hydrophobic" meaning "water fearing". |
