Facsimile editions of George Green's famous Essays are now available for sale. All profits from the sale of these books is used by the George Green Memorial Fund to promote interest in science among the young people of the East Midlands.

Four volumes are available:

George Green (1793-1841) was one of the most remarkable of nineteenth century physicists, a self-taught mathematician whose work has contributed greatly to modern physics. He was a pioneer in the application of mathematics to physical problems. He had very little formal education and died without achieving any recognition among other mathematicians.

Volume 1: The First Essay (paperback)

Essay on the Application of Mathematical Analysis to the Theories of Electricity and Magnetism
Facsimile of essay first published in 1828
ISBN 1-871281-01-6
Paperback, 88 pages, height 243 mm, width 190 mm

(This item is also available in hardback. See below)

A facsimile of the famous essay by a self-taught mathematican which has contributed greatly to modern physics. The Green’s function has been very widely applied to equations arising in classical physics and engineering and in recent years has been adapted to quantum mechanical problems in areas as diverse as nuclear physics, quantum electrodynamics and superconductivity.

Lord Kelvin rediscovered his work four years after his death and gave it wide publicity. Kelvin, James Clerk Maxwell, George Gabriel Stokes and others built on his pioneering work and Green gained a posthumous reputation amongst 19th- and 20th-century mathematicians and scientists. His work has had great influence and nowadays he is remembered principally for Green’s theorem in vector analysis, Green’s tensor (or the Cauchy-Green tensor) in elasticity theory and above all for Green’s functions for solving differential equations.
The Green’s function technique has been very widely applied to equations arising in classical physics and engineering and in recent years has been adapted to quantum mechanical problems in areas as diverse as nuclear physics, quantum electrodynamics and superconductivity.
This essay is remarkable for its clarity of exposition and modern mathematical notation. It can easily be understood and read with profit by today’s mathematical physicists.

Volume 3: Vibrations and Waves

ISBN: 1-871281-10-5
Paperback, 99 pages, height 243 mm, width 190 mm
£10 plus postage and packing.

Seven papers on wave theory published between 1833 and 1839. The first was sponsored by Sir Edward Bromhead patronage and published in the Transactions of the Royal Society of Edinburgh. Green continued his research in hydrodynamics before turning his attention to the question of the reflection and refraction of sound and light. His last six papers were written in Cambridge and published in the Cambridge Philosophical Society's Transactions.
