The warming of the eastern tropical Pacific which occurs every few years causes large-scale changes in the atmosphere. Rainfall increases dramatically in Ecuador and northern Peru, causing coastal flooding and erosion. At the same time droughts and forest fires are caused in Indonesia, Australia, and northeastern South America and with altered patterns of tropical storms in the tropical belt.
During the stronger El Niño episodes severe winter weather can be caused in North and South America.
