The first volcanoes released gases, making the first atmosphere. We are not sure which molecules the atmosphere was made of. It probably contained carbon dioxide molecules and water, as well as many other molecules. One thing is known: there were no oxygen molecules in that atmosphere.
The atmosphere we know today appeared much later.
