Nucleic acids are of two types: DNA and RNA. The difference between them lies in the type of sugar they use in their sugar-phosphate backbone and in the bases they use.
In life today DNA is mainly used to store information in genes, while RNA is not. Some people believe that RNA was used by life before DNA, since it is more closely involved with the protein building system, which is fundamental to the process of life. In this view, life began by using RNA and proteins, and only later was information stored in DNA. |
