After the mass extinction of 250 million years ago, one group of reptiles called dinosaurs started to dominate all others. Their name means terrible lizard. They were the commonest vertebrates for the next 150 million years. During their rule there were plant-eating and meat-eating ones, walking, flying and swimming dinosaurs, big ones, small ones.
At the time when the dinosaurs became dominant, all the land of the Earth was gathered together into Pangaea. |

Figure 1 Credit
The elephant-size Styracosaurus of the late Cretaceous Period was equipped with the most spectacular set of horns in the animal kingdom. Perhaps this Styracosaur is revelling in a dust bath much as elephants do today, or maybe he has wheeled to face an intruder, kicking up a cloud of dust in his excitement. Since it happened over 65 million years ago, we'll never know which it was.
