One of the major unsolved problems of astronomy is the so-called 'dark matter' or 'missing mass' problem. By studying the way galaxies move astronomers can work out what their gravitational force is. And by looking at the stars they contain, astronomers can calculate how much matter galaxies contain. It turns out that galaxies have far too few stars to account for their gravitational force. So, the astronomers conclude, there must be some invisible matter which produces this extra gravity. Because they cannot see the matter they call it dark mass.
One theory is that neutrinos have a little mass, and that this accounts for the dark matter. My guess, for what it is worth, is that planets are extremely common round stars, and they account for the dark matter. |
