Many bacteria can produce spores when times are hard. Spores contain almost no water or proteins but still contain all the genes of the bacterium. Almost all the processes of life are shut down. They have very tough walls and can survive very harsh conditions. They can even survive in space, giving rise to the idea that life arrived on Earth from another planet. Perhaps spores evolved into viruses.
