Our new free weekly podcast Time Crystal tells this story as sci-fi fantasy

Alpha particles were formed by nuclear fusion in the big bang. They are also made in stars during the main part of their lives. About one quarter of the mass of the Universe is in this form.

When an alpha particle gains two electrons it becomes a helium atom. Therefore alphas are often called helium nuclei.

An alpha particle is a very stable combination of two protons and two neutrons.
