An alkali is a soluble hydroxide of one of the "alkali" metals lithium, sodium, potassium, rubidium, and cesium. For example sodium hydroxide NaOH. Alkalis are strong bases. Ammonia dissolves in water to form a alkali, ammonium hydroxide.
